Why I Love Designing Restaurant Menus — And Why It Matters

There’s something uniquely satisfying about designing a restaurant menu. As a graphic designer, it’s one of the most complex, yet fun challenges I get to tackle. From fitting every item neatly on the page to making sure each section is visually balanced and easy to read, menu design is a blend of creativity and strategy — and I love every part of it.

The Art and Strategy Behind Menu Design

Menus are more than just a list of dishes — they’re a key part of a restaurant’s brand experience. A well-designed menu can guide diners’ choices, highlight high-margin items, and set the tone for the entire dining experience. Whether it’s a cozy café, an upscale restaurant, or a food truck with attitude, the design has to match the vibe.

I enjoy the challenge of organizing lots of information in a way that’s visually appealing and easy to scan. From choosing the right fonts and colors to adjusting spacing and layout, every detail plays a role. It’s like solving a puzzle — and I’m all about those satisfying solutions.

A Foodie’s Dream Project

Another reason I love menu design? The food descriptions! While I’m laying out sections and organizing headers, I get to read through every item — appetizers, entrées, desserts, you name it. It’s like a mini culinary tour while I work. And sometimes, I’ll even find a new dish I can’t wait to try!

Design Inspired by the Wild Colors of Costa Rica

After an amazing adventure in Costa Rica, I’m back — and bursting with inspiration!

From breathtaking ocean views to vibrant jungle colors, Costa Rica delivered nonstop visual magic. Every corner of the landscape was alive with creativity — from the deep greens of the rainforest to the dazzling blues of the Pacific, and the pops of color from tropical birds and blooming flowers. There’s no doubt: Costa Rica is nature’s design playground.

Costa Rica reminded me that inspiration is everywhere — if you’re open to seeing it. And now, I’m excited to channel this energy into my work. Expect to see bold colors and a touch of jungle flair in upcoming projects.

Being surrounded by such raw beauty helped me remember why I became a designer in the first place: to tell stories visually, to celebrate color and creativity, and to bring a sense of wonder into everyday life.

Fun Things to Ask AI to Create — And Why a Designer Still Rules the Game

Let’s be real – AI is fun! Like, create-an-image-of-me-as-an-action-figure fun. It’s like having a digital genie at your fingertips, ready to turn your wildest ideas into something (usually) hilarious, sometimes stunning, and always unexpected. It’s always a blast playing around and asking for images of what AI thinks your life looks like—whether it’s transforming your workspace into a comic book scene, imagining your pet as a superhero, or turning you into a character straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon.

Here are a few fun questions and requests I’ve asked ChatGPT recently – and the results did not disappoint.

Take this gem: I asked Adobe Firefly for an image of our family dog… a “German Shorthaired Pointer pointing at a bird” — and this is what I got…. A dog with 5 arms?? I even tried it twice with the same hilarious results.

Why Formula One Car Livery is the Pinnacle of Design

Last year, we had the incredible privilege of attending Formula 1 Miami and seeing these engineering masterpieces up close. The speed, precision, and aerodynamics of these cars is just amazing. But beyond their engineering prowess, F1 cars are also a canvas for artistic expression. The evolution of F1 liveries—from simple national colors to complex branding masterpieces—reflects both technological advancements and shifting design trends.

The Evolution of F1 Livery

In the early days of Formula 1, cars were painted in solid national colors. British teams raced in British racing green, Italian teams in red, and French teams in blue. This tradition persisted until the late 1960s when sponsorships revolutionized F1 aesthetics. A car’s livery refers to its unique color scheme and branding, serving as both a visual identity and a marketing tool. In 1968, Team Lotus broke new ground by introducing the first commercially sponsored livery with the Gold Leaf tobacco branding, marking the beginning of modern F1 livery design.

The Science of Speed and Style

F1 car design isn’t just about performance—it’s about visibility, branding, and identity. The sleek paintwork and decals must balance aerodynamics with eye-catching aesthetics. Today’s teams use lightweight vinyl wraps instead of heavy paint to maintain the car’s optimal weight and aerodynamics. Matte finishes, pioneered by Red Bull Racing, have become popular for their ability to reduce glare and improve photography.

Iconic Liveries Through the Decades

Over the years, certain liveries have become legendary. McLaren’s red and white Marlboro scheme from the Ayrton Senna era remains one of the most recognizable in motorsport history. Ferrari’s signature Rosso Corsa red has been a staple of the grid, while Williams‘ iconic blue and white Rothmans livery of the ‘90s brought a classic elegance to the sport.

More recently, teams have embraced bold designs. Red Bull Racing consistently delivers striking matte blue and red designs, while McLaren has experimented with retro Gulf liveries and sleek chrome finishes. In 2024, special edition liveries—such as Red Bull’s tribute designs—continue to captivate fans and push creative boundaries.

How Often Should You Update or Change Your Logo?

Your logo is the face of your brand—it’s the first impression customers get and a key part of your business identity. But as design trends, customer expectations, and your business evolve, you may start wondering: How often should I update or change my logo?

Signs It’s Time for a Logo Refresh

You don’t need to overhaul your logo every year, but there are certain signs that indicate it’s time for an update:

✅ Your Business Has Grown or Changed – If you’ve expanded your services, changed your target audience, or shifted your brand’s focus, your logo should reflect those updates.

✅ It Looks Outdated – Design trends change, and an outdated logo can make your brand feel stuck in the past. A refresh can modernize your look while maintaining brand recognition.

✅ It’s Not Versatile – If your logo doesn’t work well on social media, mobile screens, or printed materials, it may be time for a redesign that’s more adaptable.

✅ It Doesn’t Reflect Your Brand Identity – If your logo no longer aligns with your business’s mission, values, or aesthetics, a rebrand can help bring everything back into alignment.

How Often Should You Refresh Your Logo?

A minor refresh (small tweaks to fonts, colors, or layout) is recommended every 5-7 years, while a full rebrand (a completely new logo) may be necessary every 10-15 years depending on industry trends and business growth.

Some of the world’s biggest brands, like Starbucks and Apple, have refreshed their logos over time while keeping their core identity intact. The key is to evolve without losing brand recognition.

Many of the world’s most recognizable brands have successfully updated their logos over time, proving that evolution is key to staying relevant. Apple transitioned from a detailed illustration to the sleek, minimalist apple we know today, reflecting its shift toward modern innovation (Apple Logo Evolution).
